PROKASH KARMAKAR
(1933 - 2014)

Prokash Karmakar, a renowned Indian artist born in 1933 in Kolkata, West Bengal, began his artistic journey under his father's tutelage, artist-teacher Prahlad Karmakar.

His art delves into life's contemplation, influenced by personal traumas and historical dark moments. A fellowship trip to France in 1969-70 to study art museums expanded his horizons, leading him to create figurative monochrome paintings as a colorist.

His artwork graces the collections of prestigious Indian institutions, including the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi. Karmakar received numerous awards and is renowned for his vibrant landscapes and nudes, characterized by bold lines and intricate textures. His paintings reflect his unique perspective on nature, life (both rural and urban), and form, free from religious influences.
